Kenmore history

Welcome to Kenmore, a charming enclave where history and community bloom together amid old-growth trees and picturesque landscapes. Our neighborhood's story began in 1929, crafted from the vision of a developer who saw more than just land; he envisioned a thriving residential oasis on the outskirts of Muncie.

The Early Vision

Kenmore was conceived as a "carefully planned, completely improved, finer residential district" adjacent to Muncie’s bustling Northwest section. Nestled just west of the local college campus, Kenmore offered easy access to the city via Jackson Street, Riverside Avenue, Gilbert Street, and University Avenue. Designed to be free of traffic hazards and delays, it originally promised a serene escape within two miles of the city's business district.

Development Through the Decades

From the 1920s to the 1970s, Kenmore flourished as homes rose from its fertile soil. Each of the nearly 200 homes have been set against a backdrop of rolling hills and natural vistas, creating a patchwork of unique and picturesque living spaces. The developer's original vision included a large central gathering space—now our beloved Guthrie Park, a Muncie city park—which remains a crown jewel in the heart of Kenmore, offering residents and visitors alike a restful retreat from the structured urban grid.

Community and Education

Kenmore is not just a place to live, but a vibrant community where growth and learning are at the forefront. Westview Elementary School, situated on the southwest corner of our neighborhood, stands as a beacon of education and community spirit. This addition to Kenmore's landscape, coming years after the neighborhood's establishment, continues a proud tradition of educational excellence. Nearby, the renowned Burris Laboratory School serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade and Ball State University offers exceptional educational opportunities that have been a cornerstone of our community since its early days. These institutions enrich our neighborhood, providing a dynamic environment for lifelong learning and academic engagement.

Recent Enhancements

In recent years, Kenmore has only continued to grow more beautiful and accessible. A wonderful trail down Riverside has been added, enhancing the connectivity and outdoor recreational opportunities for our residents. This trail not only invites active lifestyles but also embraces the scenic beauty that has always been a part of Kenmore’s charm.

A Community of High Character

Today, Kenmore stands as a testament to the vision of its founders. It is a neighborhood that has not only preserved its historical roots but has also adapted to meet modern needs without losing its unique character. Here, old meets new, nature meets community, and history meets the promise of tomorrow. Come, walk our shaded paths, play in Guthrie Park, learn in our schools, and be part of a community that continues to thrive with pride and care.
